Frenchie Ears!

Let’s talk EARS! Those big rounded off erect ears are one of the classic Frenchie characteristics we all know and love. To answer a question we often get: We do not interfere with their ears at any point in the birth or whelping process…they are born with them exactly as they are. Incidentally “the way they are” typically until at least 4 weeks of age, is floppy and down. They start to slowly come up, in the most erratic and unpredictable of ways after that point. Most often Frenchie ears are all the way up by the time they are 8 weeks old, but bigger pups will sometimes take even a touch longer. We always call the 4-8 week stage the musical ear stage. They will quite literally wake up from a nap with just one ear up, and then it’ll go down again. Next day the other might come up, and it might stay up or might not. But eventually they all end in the same place: Up. To this day we’ve never had a Frenchie or Frenchton pup grow out with anything but both ears perfectly up. The next stage of EARS after they are up, is the curl back stage. They often look squared off from the front, but it’s just another developmental stage that is hugely affected by teething and the use of their system’s calcium reserves. Throw a tablespoon of cottage cheese in their food once a day…. Or don’t. It won’t matter in the long run but you can do that if it makes you feel better and it might help speed the process up. It’s all just another part of the cuteness that is Frenchie baby life.
